APPLETON CITY — The Appleton City Finance Committee on Sept. 22 approved a sole-source purchase of two niche progressive-capacity pumps from Crane Engineering for $49,953.
The committee approved agenda item 25-1075 by unanimous voice vote, 4-0. The item was presented as a sole-source procurement due to the specialized application of the pumps and the longevity concerns staff reported about alternative, non-OEM units.
Director Stempa, who answered member questions about the procurement, said the city has used these pumps in relevant applications for years and described them as the department’s “gold standard.” Stempa said the city had tried non-OEM alternatives but they “don’t last as long.” He explained the two pumps are for different uses — one for a lower-use area of the plant (the last similar unit was replaced about 20 years ago) and one for a haul-waste program that faces harsher conditions — and that the department budgets to keep a spare on reserve.
The committee confirmed the purchase fits within existing budget capacity and voted to approve the sole-source award to Crane Engineering for $49,953.
