Henderson County Board elects officers, approves first reading of revised credit-recovery policy

Henderson County Board of Education members elected John Walker as chairman, Jeff Camper as vice chairman and Mike Tate as the TLN representative and approved the first reading of an amended Board Policy 4.21 on credit recovery during their Sept. 11 meeting at the board office. The board also approved the consent agenda and heard school and personnel recognitions and updates from the director of schools.

The first reading approved by the board adjusts the district's credit-recovery eligibility metric. Director of Schools Danny Beacham said high school principals and counselors recommended changing the threshold for credit recovery from a grade below 50% to a grade below 40%. Beacham also said state law now sets 60% as the failure point in high schools, a change his remarks connected to the recommendation earlier in the process.

The policy change was presented as a first reading; board members then moved to approve the reading. The motion to approve the first reading carried. The record shows the board debated the recommended numerical threshold and the rationale offered by principals and counselors, but no statute or ordinance citation beyond a general reference to state law was provided during the meeting.

Board business handled by motion included adopting the regular agenda and approving the consent agenda, which the chair said included minutes, financial reports and field-trip approvals. The board conducted officer elections by acclamation: Walker as chairman, Camper as vice chairman and Tate as the TLN representative.

Director Beacham used his update to recognize three teachers who received tenure and to highlight district accountability and facility matters. Beacham said Henderson County Schools overall is a Level 4 district on the state accountability scale and that two schools in the district had Level 5 ratings. He also reported that a contract described as a 'vertical improvement' was signed by 'Mister Miles' and Beacham and that work on that project can begin immediately. Assistant Principal Shannon Lewis, representing Beaver School, described recent facility and aesthetic improvements and said, "Our mission is simple but powerful. We want to ensure that every child that walks through our door feels safe, supported and able to reach their full potential."

There were no public comments. The board set its next regular meeting for Oct. 9 at 6:00 p.m. and adjourned.
