Montgomery County Schools identify 29 surplus buses; technology items to be sold online

A maintenance department staff member said the buses "have reached the end of their service life and they're ineligible for an extension from the Tennessee Department of Safety." The staff member said the district's operations department typically extends bus life as long as permitted, but these 29 units no longer meet the condition, age and mileage thresholds required by state regulation.
On technology surplus, a district technology staff member told the board that items deemed ineligible for continued use include laptops, desktops, LCD projectors, printers, copiers, computer parts, typewriters and laminators. "They are listed online through websites such as GovDeals and then that money that is recouped is then put back into the technology to buy new technology," the staff member said in response to a board member question about the sale method.
Why it matters: declaring buses and equipment surplus starts a disposal or auction process and can affect transportation capacity, replacement timing and the technology refresh budget.
The board did not take formal action during the work session; the items were presented as part of the study packet for future declaration as surplus. No sale dates or estimated proceeds were provided in the meeting record.
