Council approves $268,494 purchase of 2027 Freightliner dump truck; 16–18 month lead time

The Trenton City Council on Sept. 15 approved the purchase of a new 2027 Freightliner cab chassis with an underbody scraper and salt spreader from Wolverine Truck Group in the amount of $268,494.
DPS Director Sergeant told the council the truck will replace a 2007 model that has surpassed its useful life, and staff recommend proceeding because the lead time for delivery is 16 to 18 months. The vehicle serves daily DPW water and sewer operations and is a frontline plow and road-grading truck.
Council members asked about the fleet-replacement schedule. Councilman Kevin Wood noted another truck likely will need replacement in about two years and urged advance planning; Sergeant said getting lead time right is the primary driver for earlier purchase requests. Councilwoman Rodriguez asked about life expectancy; Sergeant said "if you can get 15 years out of it, you're doing pretty good."
The purchase was budgeted in the Water Fund Machinery and Equipment account; the council approved the recommendation by voice vote. Staff also authorized surplus of the 2007 truck at a future auction.
