Garden City to host Chili Cook-Off, pancake breakfast to raise funds for Straight farmhouse pavilion

Garden City officials told the council on Monday that the city’s annual Chili Cook-Off and associated community events are set for Saturday, Sept. 27, beginning at 9 a.m., and that proceeds from a pancake breakfast will benefit construction of a pavilion near the Straight farmhouse.
Community Development Director Matt Miller said the pancake breakfast (9 a.m. to noon) will be run in partnership with the Kiwanis, Rotary and Lions Club, and that All Phases Ceilings and Carpentry is the pancake breakfast lead sponsor and is covering food and material costs so proceeds can be dedicated to the pavilion project. "All of the proceeds from that will go to the Straight farmhouse for the building of the pavilion there," Miller said.
The day’s activities include a car and motorcycle show registration beginning at 9 a.m., children’s activities, fire and police open houses, a touch-a-truck area, a mini-golf area and music and bands in the afternoon. Chili tasting begins at noon; the beer tent opens at 11 a.m., and awards are scheduled for 4 p.m. The city said 12 chili teams had registered as of the meeting.
Organizers said Naikin Transit will provide shuttle service from the high school and city hall to the event site, and that food vendors include Shindig Eats, Frosty Bee's, Detroit Mini Donut, Custard Hut, Chubb Smokehouse, Snow Biz Delight, Go Time, Bro Modern Eatery, Saucer Detroit and Fatma's Bakery.
Miller asked for volunteers and encouraged participation. He also thanked the event sponsors, which include All Phases Ceilings and Carpentry, Hennessy Engineers, Garden City Jewelry Coin, Garden City Pawn, the GCYAA, King Kone, Naikin Transit Commission, PKSA Karate, J & J Taxes and Moore, West Binkle Bakery, Sports Venue, Garden City Hospital and the Garden City Business Alliance.
City staff noted a mobile Secretary of State office will be onsite during the event.
