Shawnee County signs agreement to house juveniles at Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation facility

The Shawnee County Department of Corrections asked the commission on Sept. 22 to approve contract C349-2025, a memorandum of agreement with the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation to house juvenile offenders. The commission approved the agreement 3-0.
Bridal Cole, representing the Department of Corrections, said the county already maintains an agreement to house adult inmates with the Nation and that the Nation approached the county about housing juveniles. Cole said the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation would pay the county's per-diem rate of $300 per day and would cover off-site medical and housing medical expenses for juveniles housed under the agreement.
Cole said county attorneys and the counselor's office reviewed the agreement before presentation to the commission. Commissioners moved to approve the MOA and recorded a unanimous vote; Cole said the contract would allow the county to continue the existing relationship with the Nation and address juvenile housing needs.
