Shawnee County to seek design and construction engineering for Maple Hill bridge replacement and painting

Shawnee County Public Works asked the board Sept. 22 to issue a request for qualifications to obtain design and construction engineering services for a two-year project to replace the bridge deck and paint the superstructure on Northwest Maple Hill Road over the Kansas River.
Kurtney House, Director of Public Works, told commissioners the work would be substantial, with estimated costs of approximately $4 million to $5 million. House said the first year's deck replacement would require a full closure and a substantial detour for local traffic connecting Maple Hill, Roscoe and St. Marys; the second year's superstructure painting could be done under traffic.
House confirmed the bridge is wholly within Shawnee County jurisdiction and that he is not aware of KDOT participation in maintenance projects of this type. The board voted 3-0 to issue the RFQ.
Commissioners asked about decking material and durability; House said the existing deck is concrete and would be removed and replaced. Public works expects the project, once completed, to extend the bridge life for several decades if maintained according to schedule.
The motion to issue an RFQ for design and construction engineering passed unanimously; staff will return with procurement responses and design recommendations before construction procurement.
