The clerk explained that as of July 1 a change in state law — cited at the meeting as IC 3‑6‑5‑8 — requires the board chair to be elected by the board and to serve a four‑year term aligned with the county clerk’s term. The clerk told members the elected chair’s term will end on Dec. 31, 2026, and that the board will again elect a chair at its first meeting in January 2027.
Board discussion referenced the prior informal rotation practice — used to balance party representation at chair transitions — and several members described the change as upending that practice. A board member nominated himself for the chair position and a colleague seconded the nomination. The board conducted a roll‑call vote; one member (identified in the roll call as Miss Givens) voted no and the motion carried by recorded vote.
Board members discussed that a chair may resign the role between elections without resigning the board seat and that a replacement may then be elected. The clerk and county counsel said they would prepare documentation and that the new statutory procedure would be included in future packets.
