The Alva Chamber of Commerce used its regular meeting to promote this weekend’s Big Cruising Car Show, publicize an innovation award for the Corey Washburn Memorial Pool and outline a slate of fall events and small-business supports including a $10,000 business-model competition.
The chamber said the Big Cruising Car Show has grown over roughly 24 years into one of the region’s larger free car exhibitions, drawing hundreds of vehicles and visitors and producing revenue for local hotels, restaurants and retailers. Organizers also noted an annual hay-maze attraction and related downtown cruises and live-music lineups connected to the car-show weekend.
Chamber leaders asked members to subscribe to the chamber newsletter and said the organization is adopting a customer-relationship management tool and electronic invoicing to improve communications and member shout-outs. The chamber said its governance committee is verifying results of a recent board election and will announce two new board members next week.
On facilities and awards, the meeting noted that the Corey Washburn Memorial Pool was nominated for and received an innovation award; the chamber said the award trophy is currently at City Hall and a plaque is being prepared. The chamber encouraged residents to view coverage of the pool on the chamber’s Facebook page.
For small businesses, the meeting publicized a Northwest Tech business-model competition with $10,000 in prizes and printed application packets available from the chamber. The chamber also listed a free small-business conference and workshop set for Oct. 27, a Star Lumber customer-appreciation day on Oct. 10, and a Rialto/AlphaVerse documentary screening and director panel scheduled for early October; specific screening and panel dates were named in the meeting materials circulated in the newsletter.
Other community items included a constitution-day program on Sept. 29 open to the public, Northwestern family day and related downtown promotions on Sept. 27, and plans for three new murals to be installed during the next Northwest Mural Fest paired with the Northwestern Foundation reunion in April.
On public health, the chamber urged residents not to delay flu shots and pointed to Alpha Health and Wellness and other local providers as places to receive vaccinations. The meeting also noted local grief-support gatherings beginning Sept. 22 at the Alva Nazarene Church.
The chamber described fundraising activity tied to a local program called BankIt: the meeting reported a $9,300 BankIt donation to a senior-citizen program (described in the meeting as “Wisconsin senior citizens”), and outlined the chamber’s ongoing Bridge to Hope partnership and a pledge drive that the chamber said had raised substantial community contributions year to date. The chamber also encouraged donations and volunteers for upcoming holiday and playground projects.
