The Keizer Traffic Safety Bikeways Pedestrian Committee on Sept. 18 received a brief update on its pilot pedestrian-flag program and agreed to continue gathering data through the field season.
A staff member reported the pilot's online survey had four responses and that three flags were replaced this month. Committee members suggested the experiment continue through the fall and winter to determine seasonality: whether flags are needed when playing fields are not in regular use.
Hirsch, a committee member, advised running the pilot through winter so the committee has empirical evidence about usage and need rather than making assumptions. Committee members discussed that if fields are truly year-round, flags might need to remain; if not, flags could be removed during low-use months to save maintenance effort.
The committee asked staff to note locations where flags are missing or found loose near bus stops and recommended a periodic inventory to track attrition. No formal vote was taken; the committee treated the pilot as an ongoing experiment and requested a follow-up report with additional survey responses and a flag-inventory update.
