Summary
The Tempe School District governing board approved an award for an immersive media learning environment after a board member said backup materials were not initially posted publicly. One board member noted only one vendor responded to a widely circulated solicitation.
The Tempe School District governing board on Sept. 17 approved the district's immersive media learning environment proposal after brief discussion about public transparency and vendor response.
A board member said when reviewing the item they did not initially find backup materials posted publicly and asked for greater transparency so the public could see procurement details. "I was just concerned that I wanted More transparency. To know if anybody's questioning that that we have the information and now and it sounds like a good idea to us at this point," the board member said during discussion.
Another board member noted the district had solicited proposals widely but received a single response, which that member framed as typical for cutting-edge products. "A notice of solicitation was sent out to a 127 vendors and only 1 proposal was received," the board member said. "I think that's just the nature of being on the cutting edge of something." The board member called the single response "a good sign" for the district's choice to pursue the technology.
Following discussion, the governing board voted to approve the immersive media learning environment award. The agenda item had been pulled from the consent agenda earlier in the meeting so board members could discuss it in open session.
The motion to approve passed on voice vote. The district did not provide detailed cost or vendor-identifying information during the discussion on the record; board members said some supporting materials were subsequently provided to them.
