Architect Mariana Sevin Fleshman of BRW Architects told the board the proposal is “a shade structure… attached by metal plates on the outer side of this partial retaining wall” and that the proposed sail fabric would be a sky-blue color. She said the structure is intended to “provide just some shade to increase the usability of that space” for families who use the fenced children’s patio.
The board’s discussion was brief. A staff member explained the project was routed to the Design Review Board because it is a public structure and did not fit typical staff-level review processes. Board members asked whether the structure is temporary; the applicant replied that while she is not the vendor, the vendor estimated the fabric would likely need replacement in about 10 years. No public speakers addressed the board.
After questions from board members about materials and durability, a board member moved to adopt the draft resolution approving the project. The motion was seconded and approved unanimously by the three members present. The motion passed 3 to 0, with two members absent.
The resolution approved the applicant’s drawings and the sky-blue fabric sail as presented. The board did not record additional conditions in the hearing record beyond those stated in the draft resolution.
