Pollard School community mourns counselor Amy Legasse, Principal Sullivan says

Principal Sullivan told the Timberlane Regional School District school board that Pollard School is grieving the recent death of counselor Amy Legasse and described the family and school’s response.

“Amy had a way of listening that made you feel like what you said mattered,” Principal Sullivan said. “She was compassionate, dedicated, selfless, positive, strong, brave, and loving.” Sullivan said Legasse, who had been with the school for about four years, had hosted a regular “lunch bunch” and had an abiding connection with students and colleagues.

Sullivan said the family told school leaders that it had been meaningful that staff and the student body were able to attend the services. “Her husband…said he didn’t realize what impact she had on us, and how much she was loved by us here in the community,” Sullivan said. The principal described broad community outreach and support after the death and said the school is focused on healing and supporting staff and students while the counselor position remains vacant.

The board observed a moment of condolence and moved the meeting’s delegates and individual-comments period to the end of the agenda to allow more time for an update and public participation. No formal personnel action related to the position was taken at the meeting.

What happens next: Sullivan said the school will eventually fill the counselor position but is allowing time for staff and students to grieve; administrators will continue to provide support to families and staff and will coordinate next steps for coverage.
