Inspectional Services says city not preempted by state building code on outdoor bike rack materials

The Somerville Inspectional Services Department (ISD) informed the Land Use Committee on Oct. 21 that the state building code does not preempt municipal action on materials used to ground outdoor bike racks.
Yasmin Radassi, the council’s legislative liaison speaking on behalf of ISD, told the committee the department had reviewed the question — which arose from a council request — and concluded “there is no preemption based on state building code.”
Councilor Wilson asked for the item to be marked work completed and said he would follow up with Director Ross and planning staff offline to determine whether any additional action or standards are needed. The committee accepted the staff response and marked the item complete for committee purposes.
