Dixon Unified shares baseline i-Ready results; administration highlights curriculum rollout and a tutoring pilot

Dixon Unified School District staff on Sept. 18 presented baseline results from i-Ready Diagnostic 1 and described planned instructional changes and support services intended to raise student outcomes.
Christine Fiorelli, executive director of education services, told the board that the August diagnostic results largely reflect the prior year’s instruction and “show many more students in the areas of below grade level than we'd like to see.” Fiorelli and other staff said the results do not yet capture curricular changes and improved Tier 1 instruction the district began implementing this school year.
Fiorelli said the district expects to see impacts from new curriculum and interventions when Diagnostic 2 is administered in December. She described ongoing classroom-level professional development and district-level coaching for teachers. "These outcomes don't reflect the work that's being done this school year to make significant improvements in both ELA and math," Fiorelli said.
Superintendent Brett Barley and board members discussed complementary supports. Board member Virginia Espinosa announced that Dixon Unified — through the Solano County School Boards Association and in coordination with the Solano County Library and UC Davis — is participating in a five-week tutoring pilot that will begin in Fairfield and could be brought to Dixon later in the fall. Espinosa said the tutoring would be especially aimed at students struggling in language arts and could be offered at an elementary or middle school site.
Why this matters: Diagnostic 1 establishes a baseline for the school year. The district emphasized that early results reflect work from the prior year and that the combination of new curriculum, in-class coaching and outside tutoring are intended to reduce the number of students scoring in the lowest bands.
Board members asked for opportunities to observe classroom implementation. One board member requested a site visit to see "walk-to-read" transitions in action and staff welcomed visits as part of future board engagement.
Ending: District staff said they will report Diagnostic 2 results in December and continue reviewing student-level diagnostics to target supports.
