Superintendent Marissa Janicek presented an overview of Destination 2028, the district’s strategic plan in its third year, and reviewed priority actions the administration will pursue in 2025–26.
The presentation framed the plan around four levers: (1) the learning experience, emphasizing student-centered instruction and design thinking; (2) a responsive and caring culture that expands belonging and student leadership; (3) stewardship of fiscal and human resources, with an emphasis on transparent budgeting and facilities advocacy; and (4) design influence — modernized learning studios and collaborative spaces. Janicek said the portrait of a learner will remain the plan’s north star.
Why the plan matters: the board will use the priority actions to guide staffing, curriculum choices (including a pending mathematics curriculum review) and capital investments. Janicek noted the district scorecard and website provide metrics and videos to show progress.
Items Janicek highlighted - Learning: expand design‑thinking and personalized learning experiences; increase showcases of student work to authentic audiences. - Culture: expand Belonging Week to all schools and strengthen parent‑liaison outreach for families of students with disabilities. - Stewardship: provide regular budget updates; continue state advocacy for facilities, transitional kindergarten (TK) and special education funding; update the facility master plan. - Design: involve students in designing learning environments; activate indoor and outdoor collaborative spaces; continue modernizing learning studios with natural light and sensory supports.
Board and community engagement: Janicek and trustees agreed to post presentation materials and the scorecard on the district website; Janicek said she will hold coffees and evening sessions to widen community access and gather feedback from those unable to attend daytime meetings.
Student presence: earlier in the meeting, students from Del Mar Hills Academy presented their school experience, describing modernized learning spaces, collaborative whiteboard tables and cross‑grade mentoring. Janicek said the students’ presentation was “what I have seen throughout our school district. The love of learning, the collaboration, the use of great space.”
Next steps - Staff will post the Destination 2028 presentation and scorecard materials on the district website under the strategic plan page and continue community forums and surveys. - Trustees asked staff to produce concise recaps of community forums and to bring outcomes and measurable progress on priority actions back to the board periodically throughout the year.
