District begins Student of the Year selection process; schools to submit nominees by Oct. 6

Terrebonne Parish School District staff said the district has begun the Student of the Year selection process for 2026. Tanya Cook, supervisor of elementary education, said the program will select winners at grades 5, 8 and 12.
Cook said schools are currently choosing representatives; names are due to her office on Oct. 6. School-level winners will enter a portfolio contest and district-level selections will occur in November, with district winners announced later that month.
A board member asked that the community and local businesses be invited to support winners and nominees with donations such as gift certificates to help incentivize participation; staff acknowledged that approach as a way to raise community involvement. No formal vote was taken on the matter at the meeting.
