District adds metal detectors and stadium units for game-day and junior-high searches

District security staff told the committee the district is expanding use of metal detectors for stadium sporting events and junior-high school searches and will place permanent open-gate metal-detector sets at the parish stadiums.
Corey Butler, supervisor of child welfare and attendance, said the district ordered four additional open-gate metal-detector sets, with two to be stationed at Turbonne stadium and two at South Turbonne, so staff will not need to transport detectors for outdoor events. Gary Williams, senior security coordinator, said the district redeployed Garrett handheld metal detectors previously used at high schools to junior high schools and is training staff at selected junior highs so they can begin using the detectors within days.
Butler said stadium detectors and junior-high deployment are an addition to prior walk-throughs and searches that began last month. The district said staff training is complete at some sites and ongoing at others.
Board members did not take formal votes on the security equipment at the meeting; staff framed the actions as operational deployments and training steps.
