The Cave Creek Unified School District governing board on Wednesday approved salary-compression adjustments aimed at relieving a critical shortage of commercial driver's-license (CDL) bus drivers after an extended presentation about safety risks, long route times and an aging fleet.
Interim Director of Transportation Linda Suter told the board the department has lost nearly 40% of its workforce in two years and is operating routes at more than full capacity. "These people give of their heart and soul every day to the kids in this community," Suter said, describing drivers who routinely cover high annual mileage and routes that now average about 62 minutes.
