Las Vegas Arts Commission approves meeting minutes, hears updates on public art projects and exhibitions

The Las Vegas Arts Commission on 2025-09-16 approved the final minutes from the commission’s Aug. 28, 2025 meeting and received staff briefings on a slate of public art projects, upcoming exhibitions and community engagement plans.

The updates covered event schedules, completed and in-progress public artworks, project timelines and two installation delays: one caused by fabrication limits on curing concrete pieces and another tied to a pending contract redline.

During the meeting, Commissioner Beals moved to approve the Aug. 28, 2025 final minutes; Commissioner Chee seconded the motion. The motion passed without opposition.

Staff presentations highlighted several exhibitions and public-art efforts. Chair Sapir Cherk summarized upcoming public events at city venues, noting a reception for the solo exhibition Field by Dave Rowe at the City Hall Grand Gallery on Sept. 18 and a Civic Plaza artist panel on Sept. 19 at the Civic Center Public Meeting Room. Mary Sabo, cultural affairs staff, reviewed the commission’s calendar and tours, saying the commission’s public art tour on Oct. 29 is full and reminding commissioners of scheduled meetings in October, November and December.

Project-specific updates followed. Holly Lay reported completion of the 3 on Main sculpture installation and said an event to mark that work is planned for Nov. 6. Laura Machado announced that David Ryan was selected for the Third Street public-art commission; she said Ryan had completed a first milestone with his fabricator Jesko and that "the project is expected to be completed by 2026." Mary Sabo said the Boulder Plaza sculpture project by CR2 reached a second milestone and that the amended contract projects an expected completion date of June 2026.

Commissioners were told that Crystal Ramirez’s Civic Center Plaza piece is in construction but experiencing a small production delay: "They had a limited amount of molds. So, for every mold, it takes about 5 hours for it to cure," Laura Chatto said, explaining the pace of production for the breeze-block elements. Staff said electrical work for that project is scheduled for October and that installation is hoped for by the end of the month, with an overall estimated completion in 2025.

Holly Lay said contracting for the Listos project with Justin Favela remains in progress and that Favela is reviewing contract language: "We just haven't gotten that back to start the signature process," she said. Staff also noted that a previously titled Starchild by Wayne Littlejohn has been renamed Jean Genie and remains on track for year-end installation.

Murals and smaller projects were also discussed. Mary Sabo said artist Matthew Murphy will begin the Mirabelli Community Center mural with an expected completion by Dec. 1 and that Adolfo Gonzalez is scheduled to finish remaining walls at the Westside Education and Training Center by mid-October.

Commissioners used the agenda-item-for-future-topics segment to propose greater commissioner participation at public events, advance planning to allow commissioners to attend openings, and a possible Arts-in-the-Parks program to bring artists into city-owned parks. Commissioners agreed to place commissioner engagement, event attendance logistics and percent-for-art outreach on a future agenda for discussion.
