The Clatsop County sheriff told the Board of Commissioners that a suspicious backpack was found in a vault toilet at Fort Clatsop near the Sunset Beach approach. Oregon State Police (OSP) were the initial responders and analyzed and rendered the device safe, the sheriff said; detectives from the sheriff’s office later joined the investigation.
The sheriff said local chiefs of police have increased checks of public restrooms and facilities and that investigators are reviewing residential and business camera footage as part of the probe. The sheriff described a planned meeting with Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and other law enforcement to coordinate the response and said there was no indication the incident would repeat. Commissioners thanked the sheriff for the update and asked whether cameras might be appropriate in high‑threat locations; the sheriff said private and business cameras are already being canvassed for investigative leads.
No arrests, suspects or charges were reported at the work session, and the sheriff said the investigation is ongoing.
