Resident asks Beaver County commissioners for clarity on sheriff’s 287(g) agreement with ICE

A resident asked the Beaver County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 11 for clarity about a 287(g) memorandum of agreement (MOA) submitted by the Beaver County Sheriff’s Office to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The resident said the ICE website listed the Beaver County Sheriff’s Office as “link pending” as of Aug. 28 and asked, “what is your board’s intention once this agreement is in fact returned signed by ICE.” The resident noted ICE lists three 287(g) models—task force, warrant service and incarceration—and said the sheriff had requested the task force model.
A county commissioner replied that, after meeting with the sheriff, the sheriff had offered to appear publicly to explain his intentions once the MOA returns signed. The commissioner said, “At this time, without hearing from the sheriff, I don't have any intention of putting that onto the agenda.”
The commissioner also raised practical concerns about local liability, saying the board had “a lot of concerns with whether or not we'll be covered under our insurance policy if individuals in the sheriff's office go out and get into an accident or cause some kind of harm to somebody.” The board offered to notify the resident when the sheriff is scheduled to appear at a Wednesday work session and provided contact instructions with the clerk’s office.
No formal action or vote on the agreement was recorded during the meeting. The item remained at the public-comment stage; commissioners said they would await the sheriff’s public explanation before deciding whether to place the MOA on a voting agenda.
