Police, fire and tavern association produce training videos; committee to consider showing as resource

The committee placed the monthly tavern activities report on file on Sept. 15 and discussed a new set of short training videos produced with local law enforcement, the fire department and the tavern association to help owners and staff with safety, over‑service recognition and emergency response.
Captain Pauls reported no notable incidents beyond routine activity and said many incident calls for the month were generated by bar staff — a behavior he praised as proactive because it helps avoid escalation. He noted Hiawatha had a second violation for employing an unlicensed bartender; the owner reported all employees are now licensed and the noncompliant employee no longer works there.
Paul and other staff described five short videos filmed with local tavern operators that cover topics such as identifying fake IDs, dealing with escalating behavior and basic medical response. Tavern League board member Matt Brewer told the committee the tavern association is eager to use the videos for staff training and suggested the videos could also be distributed with picnic/event permits to educate servers at temporary events.
Committee members indicated they would like to view one or two of the videos at a future meeting and supported distribution through the tavern association and licensing channels. No formal action was recorded beyond placing the tavern report on file and agreeing to show the videos for committee review.
