Local nonprofits brief commissioners on substance-use treatment and food pantry operations

Two local nonprofits briefed the Washoe County Board of County Commissioners on Sept. 16 about services and volunteer needs.
Mary Hutchinson, chief executive officer of Step2, described the organization's residential campus in North Reno that provides substance-use-disorder treatment for women with on-site cottages for family reunification. "Since 1986, we have served over 5,000 women in our community," Hutchinson said, and she described a program model that allows mothers to live on campus with children while receiving treatment, workforce development and coordinated services with child-welfare agencies.
Claudia Castaneda described Operation Revival's food pantry and outreach in Sun Valley. Castaneda said the pantry serves about 224 families on average each distribution (about 1,000 individuals per month), with roughly 15% seniors and robust youth-mentoring services that reach multiple Title I elementary schools and one middle school. She invited commissioners to volunteer at an upcoming resource fair and free medical clinic.
Neither presentation requested immediate board action; both organizations noted they rely on community partnerships and volunteers. Commissioners thanked the groups and encouraged the public to support mentoring, volunteer and donation opportunities.
