Student Affairs says Engage strategic plan on pace; internship, basic-needs and well-being efforts highlighted

Dr. Leonard Clemons, vice president for student affairs at Austin Peay State University, told the Student Affairs Committee that the division's strategic plan, called Engage and launched in January 2024, is on pace and ahead of schedule in some areas.
Clemons said the division completed a summer internship program that placed 11 students across industries in Montgomery County. He said the internship program was run in partnership with Workforce Essentials and funded by a $50,000 grant. “This helps us continue to push our efforts of making sure that students have positive core outcomes before they graduate or as they graduate,” Clemons said.
Clemons also said the division is expanding basic-needs services for students and will soon launch a campus-wide well-being effort (referred to in the meeting as the People’s Well-Being initiative) aimed at improving social, physical and mental health. He said the reimagined student success task force, led by academic and student-affairs leaders including Provost Cordova, will kick off next week to align academic and student-support efforts.
Trustee May commented on visiting the Health Professions Building counseling area and emphasized the potential for outreach to students who are quiet and not sharing. The committee received the strategic-plan update as information and took no formal action during the meeting.
