Parish reports derelict-vessel removals and increases in condemnation, demolition activity

Terrebonne Parish officials told residents the parish is stepping up enforcement against derelict vessels and blighted properties and that removal and demolition activity has increased in the past year.
Parish staff said they identified 232 derelict vessels across four waterways and that an initial removal batch targeted 30 vessels. After the parish affixed placards to those vessels, owners removed 16 of them; the parish removed or processed the remainder. Parish officials said they will proceed with a second removal batch in short order.
On property blight and condemnation, the parish president said the parish demolished 191 properties in 2024 alone and that roughly 425 properties are currently in the condemnation process. The parish said it used about $1 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds for demolition but that the ARPA demolition fund is currently depleted; officials said they are pursuing program income and other funding to continue demolition work.
Officials also said the parish expanded the quarterly condemnation throughput from 25 to 50 properties and is exploring further scaling with council and planning partners. Parish staff said the higher demolition pace has encouraged owner compliance in some cases and reduces the need for parish-funded removals when owners respond to placards and notices.
Officials asked residents to report derelict vessels and problem properties through the parish’s reporting portal so staff can add targeted locations to the work-order system.
