Board approves metal roof replacement at 109 West Laurel

The Florence City Design Review Board approved a certificate of appropriateness for a roof material change at 109 West Laurel Street, allowing replacement of an existing asphalt shingle roof with a red metal standing-seam roof in the D-1 Redevelopment Overlay District.
Staff presented photos and noted nearby precedence for metal roofing. Property owner Ronald Banks, who told the board he recently purchased the adjacent vacant building and that the current shingles were deteriorated, said the material is standing seam metal described by the vendor as having a 30-year rust resistance warranty and a 10-year color finish warranty; he said a local vendor (Homewood Metal Works) will supply the material.
Board members asked whether the roofing profile was standing seam or ribbed panels; staff clarified the applicant sought metal roofing because the project is a change from asphalt shingle to metal. The board saw samples presented at the meeting and approved the COA “as submitted.”
