Design Review Board approves internally lit monument sign for Pointer School building

The Florence City Design Review Board approved a certificate of appropriateness for an internally illuminated monument sign at the former Pointer School property at 301 South Dargan Street (Florence County tax map number 90087-07-004), in the D-3 Arts and Culture Overlay District.
Staff described the application as similar in lighting approach to the previously discussed Irby Street sign: the sign would be about 17 feet wide by 6 feet tall with an opaque background and backlit (halo) letters. Kyle Jones, deputy superintendent of Florence School District 1, said the Pointer building will house a new health magnet innovation high school and described the sign as intended to be a “crown jewel” that draws attention to the building when it opens.
Tyson Sign Company showed mockups and explained the cabinet-style monument sign would be mounted between brick columns and a brick base already on the property and that the lighting would produce an edge/halo glow rather than full face illumination. The applicant said the sign lighting was designed to be “very subtle backlit LED lighting” and to be proportional to the large building.
Board members asked where exactly the sign would be placed; the applicant said it will be ground level “pretty much where the existing one is” at the corner of the property. The board moved to approve the COA as submitted and the certificate will be issued.
