Carbondale memorial-tree program frozen; board cites plaque problems and lack of planting space

Town staff told the Carbondale Tree Board that the town’s memorial-tree fund is currently frozen, and staff described administrative and practical problems with memorial plaques and limited public-planting space.
"That fund is frozen. And the reason it's frozen has to do specifically with the plaques on the trees, as well as just available space for new tree plantings," Carl, the town arborist, said in the meeting. He explained plaques often fall off or are vandalized, create an administrative burden for the town, and can produce conflicts when a living tree tied to an emotional dedication performs poorly or dies for reasons beyond anyone’s control.
Board members discussed alternative approaches, including a more generic online memorial or inventory entry rather than attaching plaques to trees in the field. Several members agreed the memorial concept might be worth revisiting but only in a different format that reduces maintenance and conflict risks.
Board members asked staff to treat memorial-tree program redesign as a separate project to be scoped and returned to the board for public discussion in a future meeting.
