April Jordan, representing the Cubby Center, told North Augusta residents at the city’s public powwow on Sept. 15 that the nonprofit will mark October as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Domestic Violence Awareness Month with purple ribbons and informational cards on light poles along Georgia Avenue.
“We will direct you to our website as well as our 24/7 hotline number, for assistance, help, and also information about how you can help in this public health crisis,” Jordan said. She identified the Cubby Center as a nonprofit serving victims of domestic violence and sexual assault across six South Carolina counties: Aiken, Allendale, Barnwell, Edgefield, McCormick and Saluda.
Jordan said the organization will hold a free public conference on Oct. 2 and a community awareness chili cookout on Oct. 18, and urged residents to check the group’s Facebook and Instagram pages for more details. The Cubby Center will attach an information card with contact numbers and the hotline to each purple ribbon placed on Georgia Avenue light poles for much of October.
Jordan also said the Cubby Center participates in three awareness months annually — February (teen dating violence), April (sexual assault awareness) and October (domestic violence awareness) — and that all services provided by the nonprofit are free.
The mayor and council listened during the public powwow; no formal action or funding request was recorded at the meeting.
