North Platte council approves electric, water and wastewater rate increases effective Oct. 1
Summary
The council approved Ordinance Nos. 42-22, 42-23 and 42-24 to raise electric, water and wastewater rates effective Oct. 1; electric customers will see a 3.5% increase on bills, while certain aid-to-construction credits were adjusted.
The City of North Platte on Sept. 16 approved rate changes for electric, water and wastewater services to take effect Oct. 1, 2025.
Ordinance No. 42-22 approves electric rates that, city staff said, will raise customers’ total electric bills by 3.5% across the board. The change applies to meter charges and commodity charges for both summer and winter rates. Council discussion confirmed the increase is uniform across rate categories; staff said only the aid-to-construction credit for apartment units was reduced from $800 to $500 because newer units use less electricity.
The council also approved Ordinance No. 42-23 (water rates) and Ordinance No. 42-24 (wastewater rates). City staff noted that both water and wastewater had no rate increases last year; these ordinances represent the first increases for those utilities in two years.
Why it matters: the utility rate ordinances determine customer billing levels and revenue for utility operations and capital needs. Council members asked questions about the percent increase and the rate-study work that preceded rebalancing. Staff said a consultant completed a rate study two years ago and the city has periodically rebalanced rate categories since then.
All three ordinances were adopted after the council suspended the three-reading requirement.
