North Platte council adopts 2025–26 budget and slightly reduces property tax levy

The City of North Platte on Sept. 16 adopted its fiscal 2025–26 budget and passed a resolution setting the property tax rate for the coming year, approving the appropriation ordinance and tax-rate resolution in separate votes.
The council suspended rules and approved Ordinance No. 42-21, the annual appropriation (the budget statement and appropriation bill). The mayor and council then adopted a resolution setting the levy at 35.7962¢, down from just over 36.2¢ in the current year; city staff described this as the fourth consecutive year of a levy decrease.
Why it matters: the appropriation ordinance allocates city funds for the fiscal year and the levy decision fixes the property-tax rate that funds portions of the budget.
Council discussion on the budget item was minimal at the Sept. 16 meeting; councilors called the question and approved the ordinance and the resolution. Lane, a city staff member, told the council the levy will fall to 35.7962¢ from just over 36.2¢ currently. The public hearing on the levy was opened and closed at the meeting with no public speakers recorded.
Actions approved included suspending the three-reading rule to adopt the ordinance in a single vote and adopting the resolution that sets the levy for fiscal year 2025–26.
