Enid Symphony to bring Handel’s Messiah to Alva; committee approves $2,000 grant

The committee approved a $2,000 request from the Enid Symphony Orchestra to underwrite a free performance of Handel’s Messiah in Alva on Sunday, Nov. 30.
Victoria Calderoni, executive director of the Enid Symphony Orchestra, said the performance will be presented as a gift to the Alva community at First United Methodist Church and will incorporate local performers, including students from the Northwestern Chorale and faculty guest artists. “We are going to be bringing that performance to Alva on Sunday, November 30,” Calderoni said.
Calderoni said the orchestra intends the concert to be free to the public and estimated the church’s seating capacity at about 350. She said the symphony has secured $1,000 from an anonymous donor and has an additional $1,000 pledged; the committee-approved $2,000 would complete the planned underwriting for the presentation.
The presenter said the Enid Symphony’s Messiah is part of the orchestra’s regular programming and that the organization typically alternates large holiday productions; if the Alva performance is successful, the group expects to continue presenting similar concerts on an alternate-year basis.
Committee members voted to approve the $2,000 grant request. Routine logistics — including sponsor recognition on printed materials and coordination with the First United Methodist Church — were discussed by presenters and committee members.
