Commissioners praise planning staff as Chandler advances General Plan 2026 and objective design standards work

Commissioners publicly thanked Chandler planning staff on Sept. 17 for work on the city’s General Plan 2026 update and on several zoning and code projects, including new objective design standards and middle-housing work.

A commissioner told colleagues that the planning team had been operating at high capacity while managing the General Plan 2026 update, an objective-design-standards effort, middle-housing work and several zoning cases. “They’re all running it at a 110% on the reactor,” the commissioner said, adding the workload is “clearly not sustainable, but they have been killing it.”

The speaker identified specific staff and consultant roles: a city planner named David described as managing long-range planning work for about three years; Lauren, who is overseeing the general plan updates and functions as project manager; and Terry, identified as a consultant assisting with the effort. Taylor was mentioned as reminding the speaker about upcoming schedule changes, and Hank Pluster was named as a mentor to David.

The commissioner said the city recently had a work session on objective design standards and middle housing and that the hospital-related zoning case on the agenda that evening felt small compared with the larger code and plan efforts.
