Friends group, outreach and service changes highlighted; Hoopla digital service to be introduced

A Friends of the Library representative updated trustees on fundraising, a planned book exchange and outreach at the Santa Cruz County Fair. The Friends said they are pursuing a book exchange with a library in “Novas” (not specified) to obtain English-language books and are waiting on grant payments ($10,000 expected from South32 and a pending $20,000 application to the HS Lopez Family Foundation).
The Friends and staff will run a booth at the Santa Cruz County Fair (Friday–Sunday) to distribute books, solicit donations and promote library-card sign-ups. The Friends confirmed their organization is a 501(c)(3) and that donations are tax-deductible.
Trustees discussed Little Free Libraries and printed materials; Renee designed a flyer that will be distributed at the fair. Staff said extra copies of materials are available if not distributed at the fair.
Director Carolina reviewed outreach and service changes: baby-shower outreach with the Family Resource Center, National Night Out participation, veteran bulletin boards for the America 250 program, coordination with Presidio and Tubac for an exhibit, and a scheduled Border Fashion Show at the Nogales Public Library on Oct. 3. Carolina also described “Coffee with a Cop” events to resume in October/November and confirmed Rio Rico will pilot one Saturday per month (11 a.m.–1 p.m.) for book club and kids activities; the main Hinalales Public Library fall hours will change to Mon–Thu 9–5, Fri 9–4 and Sat 10–2 starting Sept. 20.
Trustees asked for an update on the Project FELT early literacy grant; staff said the county superintendent’s office, the University of Arizona and local family resource centers are partners and that the library is a participant. They also asked about the Mariposa grant presentation; staff said that presentation was rescheduled and will be republished when available.
Staff announced training on the Hoopla digital service at the end of the month and offered to provide a board training/demo at the next meeting. No board vote resulted from these reports.
