Staff presented a fiscal-year summary of facility fee waivers approved by the City of South Gate Parks and Recreation Department, noting that the total waived amount for 2024–25 was $267,704.75.
The staff report covered monthly fee-waiver approvals and a companion summary of facility use permits and fees collected. Commissioners asked whether the total was a significant drop from the prior year; staff said it was lower and attributed the decline to fewer waiver requests and fewer large government-group events this year. A commissioner estimated prior-year totals were roughly double.
Staff explained the department’s waiver policy criteria: applicants generally must be nonprofit organizations and demonstrate a public benefit to the city; local government groups and schools are common users, but waivers require documentation and staff discretion. Steve Costly, parks and recreation director, said the policy gives the director some discretion for sponsored city events.
Commissioners also discussed the extent of Los Angeles Unified School District use of city facilities for graduations, meetings and sports, and the department noted that charging LAUSD could shift costs to families or cancel programs. The commission voted to receive and file the waiver report.
