Jessica Villalobos, youth and adult sports coordinator for the City of South Gate Parks and Recreation Department, summarized the 2024–25 year for youth and adult sports on Sept. 11.
Villalobos said youth fundamentals sessions were at full capacity and the department increased class sizes from 15 to 20 to reduce wait lists that sometimes reached 40–50 children. The sports camp ran April 14–18 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; each participant received a T-shirt, backpack, snacks and water or sports drink.
The department hosted two karate tournaments and continued its partnership with Special Olympics, hosting the LA County Games and a basketball competition that involved roughly 80 teams and more than 400 spectators. Villalobos also described a glow-in-the-dark pickleball event held in March that she said was free and family friendly.
On adult sports, Villalobos reported three full softball seasons, with 49 men’s teams and a high-water mark of 62 coed teams. An inaugural women’s softball league ran with seven teams. She said field-condition challenges (including wildfire impacts and inclement weather) required renovations and extra work but the seasons were completed.
Villalobos thanked volunteer instructors and sponsors, and commissioners acknowledged the programs’ reach. The commission received and filed the youth and adult sports report.
