Franklin Arroyo, fitness coordinator for the City of South Gate Parks and Recreation Department, told commissioners on Sept. 11 that fitness memberships began the fiscal year at about 4,400 but the department lost roughly 2,000 members after switching to a new credit card processing system.
“We were trying to get…almost back to our pre-pandemic levels,” Arroyo said. He described a winter dip in memberships and then a spring rebound driven by events and new programming.
Arroyo outlined more than 35 weekly group-exercise classes, including expanded senior classes (35–45 regular participants), new step aerobics, additional advanced yoga, a combo boxing class geared to older adults, and a Saturday high-intensity interval training class aimed at younger participants. Personal training hours were described as stagnant, with seasonal peaks and troughs.
Special events included an annual open house held in January, a Spring Fit 5K with more than 800 participants, and the fourth annual fun run on July 19 that drew more than 600 participants. Arroyo credited sponsors including Tampico, the Youth Commission, Edders Theaters and Raising Canes.
Commissioners thanked staff for outreach events and programming; the commission received and filed the department’s reports.
