Parks commission to review Fairview Park master plan; model-glider club invites commissioners to Sept. 20 flight day

The Parks and Community Services Commission heard updates on the Fairview Park master plan and an invitation from a local hobby glider group to visit the park.
Matt Garcia, who identified himself as a Costa Mesa resident and president of Harbor Sewing Society (HSS), told commissioners, “HSS would like to invite you out to Fairview Park on September 20, our next flight day, to see the activity.” He also gave an email address for follow-up and said club members were available to “walk the park and and talk about HSS and the activity.”
Parks and Community Services Director Gruener said staff is targeting a mid‑week release of the master plan draft and that the commission will see a presentation on Oct. 9. Gruener said staff will incorporate PACS feedback before taking the plan to City Council, currently planned for Oct. 21.
Vice Chair Wright and other commissioners discussed the commission’s role in reviewing the draft. Wright said the commission had prepared a memo to City Council and that “it is set for us to see it in October” so commissioners will have the draft in time for the scheduled presentation and public‑notice windows.
The commission received the department report earlier in the meeting (see related article) and members said they want to ensure adequate opportunity to view and comment on the draft master plan when it is posted.
For the public, staff said the city will use marketing and outreach to notify residents when the draft is available and to advertise the Oct. 9 PACS presentation and subsequent council date.
