San Mateo parks staff outline multi‑year playground, irrigation and tree projects; Central Park playground to close about 12 months

San Mateo Parks and Recreation staff presented a multi‑year capital improvement program update that included a Central Park playground replacement, playground repairs at neighborhood parks, upgrades to irrigation controllers, a proposed new well for the municipal golf course and an expanded tree‑planting effort.

King Leon, senior project manager, said the Central Park playground equipment has reached the end of its useful life and that the city will install new, safety‑compliant, inclusive equipment under a construction contract recently awarded by the City Council to Suarez and Munoz Construction Inc. Leon said the park is expected to be closed for construction for approximately 12 months and that a separate contract for construction management and an alternative purchase for play equipment will come to the council at a later meeting.
