Tim Watkins, chief of legislative and public affairs for the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA), briefed the Big Bear Lake City Council on Sept. 10 about Measure I, the county’s half‑cent sales tax that funds transportation projects.
Watkins said Measure I has existed in various forms since 1989 and the current extension runs through 2040. He said the measure generates roughly $200 million annually countywide and that since 2010 it has raised about $2.5 billion. Measure I funds are used for multiple purposes: matching state and federal grants, transit programs (including senior and disabled transit), local streets and roads projects through a return‑to‑source formula, and larger regional projects such as Metrolink and freeway improvements.
Watkins reported the City of Big Bear Lake receives about $600,000 annually through Measure I’s return‑to‑source program for local streets and roads and noted a mountain subarea allocation that supports major local highway programs. He also said Measure I investments have created jobs and that the ordinance limits administration of the measure to 1% of revenues.
Council members thanked SBCTA and emphasized the value of local control for transportation dollars. Watkins invited Big Bear Lake residents to review Measure I project lists and a survey on SBCTA’s website (gospcta.com) and to provide feedback on future priorities.
No formal action was requested of the council; the presentation was informational.
