Historic Preservation Commission approves storefront restoration at 601 North Main (Prairie)

The Newton Historic Preservation Commission reviewed and approved a restoration project for 601 North Main (known locally as Prairie) on Sept. 8, permitting removal of a panelized storefront system to expose and repair original glazing and transom windows.
Staff recommended approval after reviewing the application’s materials. The proposal calls for repair and replacement of glazing openings on the east and south frontages, opening and restoring previously covered transoms, and removing a metal panel system that currently covers the storefront to expose underlying brick and original storefront components. Staff concluded the proposed materials and methods align with local design guidelines and the Secretary of the Interior standards reflected in the local ordinance.
The applicant’s architect, Jacob Karst of Schafer Architecture, and property owner/agent Aaron Getter attended and described a glazing package respectful of the existing conditions. Commissioners asked questions about timing and noted the project could proceed quickly given structural concerns on the south side. The commission moved to approve the application as presented; the motion passed by voice vote.
