City staff outlines 'Newton Next' comprehensive-plan update, citizen outreach and upcoming events

City planning staff provided an update on the Newton comprehensive-plan update, branded as "Newton Next," during the Sept. 8 Planning Commission meeting and invited commissioners and the public to participate in upcoming outreach.
Rebecca (planning/historic-preservation staff) said the city selected Olson Consulting to update the 2010 plan (ReNewton). The project website is newtonnextplan.com; outreach will include a scientific community survey (random paper/mail and online components), a community-voices team, a visionary workshop and a public open house. Staff said postcards and QR codes will be distributed around the city to solicit participation.
Staff also noted leadership-targeted events for city commissioners and planning commissioners are planned for Oct. 7 (city leaders workshop at Fire Station 3, 10 a.m.–noon) and a public open house on Oct. 8. Rebecca asked planning commissioners to watch for individualized invitations and to sign up for the community-voices team if interested. Staff said the engagement will include a random-sample mailed survey to households and pop-up events downtown.
