The Newton Planning Commission approved a preliminary plat for the Burns Addition on Sept. 8, granting a waiver to omit a sidewalk on the south side of the new street.
The commission heard a brief staff presentation from planning staffer Justin, who said the development met requirements except for the one sidewalk waiver requested by the city. The applicant was not present. Commissioners asked only one substantive clarification about the cul-de-sac right-of-way before moving the matter to a vote.
Commission discussion was minimal. One commissioner remarked, “It’d be Be nice to get that developed,” and another noted the waiver should be included in the motion. A motion to approve the preliminary plat with the sidewalk waiver was moved, seconded and the commission voted in favor; the motion carried.
The approval is preliminary; the applicant will proceed with detailed engineering and subsequent submittals required by city standards. Staff indicated the waiver was the only exception; other engineering and utility conditions must be met before a final plat is recorded.
