Leadership committee agrees in principle to several committee mergers and tweaks calendar; chairs to formalize proposals

The leadership committee discussed and agreed in principle to several committee reorganizations and calendar adjustments and asked chairs to formalize proposals in writing.

Cynthia Rodriguez, the community board chair, proposed combining the sanitation committee with environmental protection and parks and recreation, saying the groups overlap and the sanitation committee has only three active members. “I just feel number 1, we we only have 3 people on sanitation ... I just think it makes sense to combine the 2,” Rodriguez said during the agenda review. Chairs present said they had spoken informally with the affected committee chairs and that the chairs supported the consolidation; leadership asked for a written proposal to place on the full board agenda.

Members also discussed formalizing a joint approach to housing and land use; chairs reported they had been meeting jointly and that a formal merger would align meeting topics. Alex Ellifson (education chair) and others noted that land use and housing discussions frequently overlap and that a written request would be submitted to formalize the change.

The committee spent substantial time adjusting the October and November calendar slots for committee meetings and the full board; members noted conflicting holidays and early-voting days. A member of the public, Kaye, raised a scheduling concern noting that “October 1 is Yom Kippur,” prompting staff and chairs to confirm that meeting times either avoid or accommodate that observance when possible.

Leadership instructed staff to record the proposed committee consolidations in committee reports and to circulate the calendar updates; formal proposals will be placed on the full board agenda for ratification.
