The Community Board 11 Education, Culture & Services Committee discussed goals for the coming year, including formalizing officer roles, expanding outreach to parents and schools, promoting the Navy Youth Leadership Award and following up on low response rates to a recent survey.
Alex Ellison, chair of the Education Committee, led a discussion about designating a secretary and a co-chair and proposed tabling full officer elections until absent members could weigh in. Jeremy (district manager) was noted as producing meeting minutes; members discussed designating him secretary or rotating the role. Dier and Deere (committee members) volunteered to share responsibilities in different ways.
Members prioritized outreach to parents and school parent coordinators. They agreed to re-send the committee survey to parent coordinators and to post application materials and community notices on the board's social channels. The committee also agreed to promote the Youth Leadership Award earlier this year to broaden applicant pools; specific award criteria and any prize amounts were not detailed in committee remarks and therefore are "not specified." Members proposed sharing information through Bronx House, school parent coordinators and civic organizations.
The committee noted a planned follow-up meeting: Jeremy and a committee member were scheduled to speak the next day with Montafire Community Center about a family enrichment site on Gun Hill adjacent to North Central Bronx Hospital; the committee said it would invite a Montafire representative to present to the board after that meeting.
Committee members also discussed vetting requests for letters of support from outside organizations and asked that nonprofits seeking endorsement appear before the committee so members can evaluate programs and hear from participants before offering a letter.
No formal committee vote was taken on the goals during the discussion; members agreed to continue coordination by email and to re-circulate the survey.
