Displaced tenants from 2910 Wallace Avenue remain in shelters; board plans follow-up

Rich Reynoso, co-chair of the Bronx Community Board 11 Housing, Land Use, Sanitation and Environmental Protection Committee, said the committee opened its Sept. 18 meeting by discussing the building at 2910 Wallace Avenue, which was damaged in a recent fire and left multiple families displaced.

“Most of the tenants are still in the shelter,” Christina Stevens, a newly appointed board member, said during the meeting.

The committee heard an account from a neighborhood volunteer identified as Yolanda, who described continuing efforts to find housing for the displaced families and said she had submitted “close to a 100 applications” on their behalf. Yolanda said the households remain scattered across different shelter placements.

The committee discussed next steps but did not take any formal vote. Members said they would raise the issue at the full board meeting so elected representatives in attendance could be asked to intervene and that the committee will invite the city program that is managing the displaced residents to speak at the next month’s meeting.

Committee members emphasized the matter will remain a standing agenda item until the board has clearer information about where the families are being housed and whether additional assistance is needed. No shelter locations, case-by-case housing placements, or program names were provided during the committee discussion.

The committee plans to follow up with staff and with the displaced-tenants program contact at the next meeting to get more complete information on placements and next steps.
