Zoning board approves expanded sign package and dedication plaques for Tunnel to Towers at 3600 Harlem Road

The Cheektowaga Zoning Board of Appeals on Sept. 17 granted variances for an expanded sign package and dedication monuments at the Tunnel to Towers Foundation site, 3600 Harlem Road, allowing a collective sign area substantially larger than the 22-square-foot limit for the RSC (residential senior citizen) district and permitting raised lettering on dedication plaques.
Mark Romanowski, representing Tunnel to Towers, said the project previously received board approval for an initial sign package but that final design work produced additional signs and tweaks. "We're back here with the project, which this board has previously approved the prior sign package," Romanowski said. He described the new elements: sign A (front-of-building, reduced from 56 to 52 square feet), sign B (a canopy-mounted sign new to this application), sign C (a new larger wayfinding sign on the south face of the building of about 63 square feet) and sign D (a monument sign that remains unchanged). Romanowski said the larger sign C was intended as a wayfinder for drivers coming from Route 33 toward Harlem.
Romanowski also described dedication monuments to be placed on the northeast corner of the site with raised lettering telling the story of Steve Seller and the Sept. 11 event; because the municipal code does not allow raised lettering under the exemptions, a variance for the lettering was requested for durability reasons.
Board members questioned lighting and traffic impacts. Romanowski said the façade signs are face-mounted and backlit with LED panels but that the signs will not include flashing or message boards: "No flashing, no messages, nothing at all." He added the monument sign previously approved sits far enough back from Harlem Road not to obstruct traffic.
A motion to grant the variances as requested was made and seconded. The board recorded ayes from the members voting in person; the motion passed. The transcript records no additional conditions on the signage beyond standard placement and lighting assurances.
