UDOT 30-year road plan prompts Paragonah planning commission to prepare for regional growth

Town planning officials reported on a Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) briefing that mapped a multi-decade approach to roads based on recent and planned housing growth in the region. Paragonah planning staff said the county and nearby towns are planning hundreds to thousands of new housing units, and the planning commission expects to update local ordinances and processes to manage growth.
A staff member who attended the UDOT meeting said UDOT’s baseline used housing counts from 2023 and then identified units under construction and planned in the near term. For Paragonah the presenter said there are six or seven housing units that the town knows of in active proposals; Parowan was reported to have roughly 700 to 900 housing units in planning or under construction, and other nearby jurisdictions reported hundreds to thousands of units. County officials characterized Iron County as one of the fastest-growing counties in Utah.
Planning commissioners told the board they will continue to prepare zoning standards and subdivisions rules so the town can manage growth “the way we want it to be” rather than having infrastructure and land-use decisions imposed without local review. Commissioners said they will coordinate with county-level planning and UDOT as needed.
Town staff said they will follow up with county commissioners and continue updating local materials and public notices to keep pace with regional planning timelines.
