Kenai P&Z discusses moving to one meeting per month for FY2026

Members of the Kenai Planning and Zoning Commission discussed on Sept. 10 whether to recommend that City Council change the commission’s meeting schedule to one regular meeting per month starting in January, while reserving the option to call special meetings for time-sensitive business.
Director Buettner opened the topic, saying the commission had canceled many summer meetings and that a reduced schedule could respect commissioners’ time while allowing staff to consolidate items for more robust agendas. Buettner said the change would be a recommendation to council because the policy currently states the commission has two meetings per month.
Commissioner Fikes supported the idea for efficiency and reduced staff costs but urged clear public communication so the change would not be perceived as limiting public input. “I would absolutely hope that the perception would be communicated, that it's not a loss in the voice or an opportunity for the public,” Fikes said.
Commissioner Reveal asked whether the commission could trigger a second meeting when agendas were heavy, suggesting a threshold (for example, more than four items) to avoid meetings running late. Buettner said staff could draft policy language that outlines triggers for additional meetings and return to the commission for refinement before any recommendation to council.
No formal action was taken; commissioners agreed to continue the discussion at a future meeting and to have staff prepare draft language that could be presented to council if the commission votes to recommend a schedule change.
